Mr Bernard Otieno ‘Imran’ Okoth of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the new MP-elect for Kibra Constituency.

Mr Okoth was declared winner on Friday morning after garnering 24,636 votes to beat Jubilee’s McDonald Mariga, who conceded defeat when the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) figures from 40 out of 183 polling stations showed he was trailing Mr Okoth.

“I want to thank God, my party leader Hon Raila Odinga, leaders who stood by me and Kibra voters. It is now evident money can’t buy leadership. I will serve you diligently and reciprocate the support you have given me,” Mr Okoth said after being declared winner.

“I will start working immediately I’m sworn in and request my opponents to support me in serving the people of Kibra. It is only through unity that Kibra will develop. I support the handshake since I am the first handshake MP,” added Mr Okoth.

Even before all the votes were declared, Mr Mariga called Mr Okoth to congratulate him on his victory.

WATCH OUT: Kieni MP Kanini Kega
Kieni Member of Parliament (MP) Kanini Kega has been accused of being behind a plot to remove Garissa Township legislator Aden Duale as National Assembly Majority Leader.
Duale alleged, the plot is being conducted behind the back of the Jubilee Party and its leader President Uhuru Kenyatta who spared him in the recent purge against perceived rebels.
The Garissa Township MP accused Kega of using uncouth means such as extortion, threats and blackmail.
“He is notoriously known for being the king of extortion who thrives in threats and blackmail. He has perfected the art of extortion so well that all he does is to purport to collect signatures only for him thereafter to solicit for favors from myself and my friends as a bait for withdrawal of signatures,” said Duale.
Duale, in a statement released on Wednesday, May 3rd, said Kega is purporting to collect signatures from other legislators for his removal contrary to the National Assembly Standing Orders.
“The National Assembly Standing Order 19 is clear on the process for removal of a Majority Leader which is by a majority of votes of all Members of the Majority Party in a Parliamentary Group chaired by the Party Leader and the decision thereafter is communicated by the Majority Whip to the Speaker. There is no place for collection of signatures.”
