Mutura Sacks Karen Nyamu, Reinstates Ouko in Cabinet Reshuffle

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 6- City lawyer Karen Nyamu has been sacked as a Nairobi County Executive Committee (CEC) member as educationist Janet Ouko has been reinstated in the City Hall cabinet.

Nyamu appointed 12 months ago by Nairobi’s former Governor Mike Sonko has been replaced by the Education and Sports CEC Lucia Mulwa.

In the changes made the acting Nairobi Governor Benson Mutura has reinstated Janet Ouko as the County Executive Committee (CEC) member in charge of Education replacing Mulwa who was moved to the Agriculture ministry.

Ms. Ouko resigned from the Education docket after an acrimonious exit in January 2019 during the then Governor Mike Sonko’s tenure, saying she was going to pursue other interests.

Ouko’s re-appointment is among the new changes announced by acting Nairobi Governor Benson Mutura on Wednesday as he moved to stamp his authority with a new team.

“In line with the powers bestowed upon by the Constitution and the County Governments Act, 2012, and in order to support the efficient exercise of County functions, I have today made the following appointments and realignments for effective service delivery,” he said.

The Institute of Education Democracy (IED) Chief Executive Officer Brian Weke, will now serve as a Legal Advisor in the Governor’s office.

Paul Mutungi was named Chief of Staff while Lucia Mulwa was transferred from Education to Agriculture.

A by-election to replace Sonko in Nairobi scheduled for February 18 was suspended following a petition he filed to contest his impeachment which, he argues, was illegal.
