11 Students Watching President Ruto’s Motorcade Fall into Septic Tank

One learner has been confirmed dead while ten others were injured have been hospitalised after falling into a septic tank at a school in Kapsabet in the school compound. The injured Kapsabet School for the Deaf students were rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital for treatment. Hospital authorities confirmed that one of the learners had succumbed to injuries on arrival. In the Thursday morning incident, the students were rushing to have a glimpse of President William Ruto, whose motorcade was passing by the school. The students stood on an old septic tank, about 20 feet long. Unable to carry the weight of the curious learners, the tank collapsed, sinking the 11 learners. The incident was confirmed by Kapsabet County CEC Angeline Kirui, who was among the first responders at the scene. Rescuers and County Disaster officers arrived at the scene, where the injured students were rescued and rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital. On hearing the reports, the Head of State made a stop at the school where he expressed regret for the disaster and offered his sympathies to the institution and support the affected students and staff. President Ruto then gave Ksh. 5 million for the development of infrastructure at the affected school. The Head of State then headed to his destination at Kapsabet Girls. The incident has prompted concerns over school safety, and authorities are working to ensure that the remaining learners receive care and that the affected area is made safe for students.
