What is often a risky holiday period for vulnerable and street-connected children in Thika has instead been turned into an opportunity for protection, mentorship and support through a community-driven outreach initiative.

Action for Children in Conflict (AFCiC) and the Thika District Business Association (TDBA), together with corporate partners including Newsline Media, Del Monte, Thika Cloth Mills, Advocate Wanjiru Mwangi, 3T, Faytech, Mac Dental, Best Budget and Hawkers Pride, on Saturday held a community outreach event in Thika on Easter Saturday aimed at supporting vulnerable and street-connected children during the school holiday period.

The event, held at St. Patrick’s Primary School grounds, brought together stakeholders for a football tournament and a donation drive targeting food, clothing and sports equipment for at-risk children.

At least eight teams participated in the tournament, attracting residents, business organisations and local leaders who turned up in large numbers to support the initiative.

AFCiC Director John Muiruri said the programme is designed to replace idle holiday time with structured engagement that helps keep children away from harmful environments.

He noted that many children are exposed to neglect, substance abuse and exploitation during school breaks, making intervention programmes critical.

“This is a period where many children are left without guidance. Through sports and community support, we are giving them a safe space and basic needs,” he said.

Muiruri added that AFCiC plans to extend similar outreach programmes across Kiambu and neighbouring counties as part of its broader child welfare agenda.

Corporate partners supported the event through donations and logistical assistance, strengthening the initiative’s reach and impact on the ground.

The Thika District Business Association said such programmes are key in building stronger communities by investing in the wellbeing of children and youth.

Local leaders and participants emphasized the importance of continuous engagement, noting that consistent outreach efforts can help break cycles of vulnerability in informal settlements.

Organisers said more holiday activities are planned to ensure sustained support for children beyond the Easter period.
