Kenyan actor William Okore, popularly known as Onyi from the television series The Real Househelps of Kawangware, has been admitted to the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) rehabilitation centre in Miritini, Mombasa, for a three-month treatment programme.

The admission, facilitated by politician and musician Charles Njagua, popularly known as Jaguar, is aimed at supporting the actor’s recovery from substance use problems.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa welcomed Onyi’s decision to seek treatment, describing it as a positive step towards recovery and an example of the importance of seeking professional help.

“We commend Onyi for taking this bold and commendable step toward recovery. His decision to seek help is a powerful reminder that substance use disorders are preventable and treatable health conditions, and that no one should feel ashamed to ask for support,” Omerikwa said.

He said NACADA was committed to supporting individuals seeking treatment through its rehabilitation facilities, which offer professional care and evidence-based interventions.

Omerikwa added that Onyi’s admission demonstrated the importance of creating an environment where people struggling with substance use can access treatment without fear of stigma.

Jaguar, a former NACADA board member who currently serves as a commissioner in the Office of the Ombudsman, said he was supporting the actor as he began his rehabilitation journey.

He described Onyi as a talented entertainer who had brought joy to Kenyans through his work and urged the public to support people seeking help for substance use problems.

“This is not just about Onyi; it is about every Kenyan who deserves a second chance at life,” Jaguar said.

Onyi thanked NACADA and Jaguar for helping him access treatment, saying he was determined to complete the programme and return to entertainment.

“This is a new chapter in my life, and I am committed to doing the work. I want to come back stronger, healthier, and ready to entertain my fans again,” he said.

He also encouraged people experiencing similar challenges to seek assistance, saying there was hope for recovery.

The admission comes as NACADA promotes its Community-Based Rehabilitation Guidelines, which seek to strengthen community support for people recovering from substance use disorders, improve access to treatment and reduce stigma.

The authority has urged Kenyans struggling with alcohol and drug use to seek assistance through its rehabilitation centres and community-based programmes, emphasising the importance of professional treatment and support in the recovery process.
