Aviation Workers Strike Causes Flight Interruptions at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

The Kenya Airports Authority has announced delays affecting departing flights at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi due to the ongoing strike by the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU). The disruptions stem from a labour dispute between KAWU and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA). KAWU announced that its members would down their tools on Monday, following a 7 day strike notice issued to KCAA. Major airlines, including Kenya's national carrier, Kenya Airways, have informed passengers of flight disruptions at JKIA as of Monday, February 16, 2026. In a statement on Monday, the carrier noted that the industrial action has affected some departures and arrivals, advising passengers to expect schedule adjustments and delays. "We sincerely regret the inconvenience and are working closely with the relevant aviation authorities and airport stakeholders to minimize disruption and maintain safe operations," the statement read in part. Likewise, passengers have been advised to check their flight status before travelling to the airport, monitor official Kenya Airways communication channels for updates or explore rebooking options. Jambojet Airline has also informed passengers of delayed flights following the industrial action. "As a result, all flights across our network are delayed, with the possibility of extended ground holding times, due to delayed clearances. These delays may increase as the situation evolves," Jambojet said in a statement on Monday. Meanwhile, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has noted that it has activated its operational continuity measures ahead of the planned industrial action. KCAA maintained that critical aviation safety and air navigation functions will remain operational and are being managed in accordance with established contingency protocols. "The Authority continues to engage relevant stakeholders in line with applicable labour laws and court directions. We reiterate our respect for due process and remain open to constructive dialogue," KCAA noted. KAWU threatened to down their tools, citing reluctance in resolving their labour issues, among them a lack of salary reviews for workers who have served for more than 11 years. The union is pushing for critical reforms, including the proper execution of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and the inclusion of contract staff in pensionable employment terms.
