NAIROBI, Kenya — The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mr. Renson Ingonga, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the sudden death of renowned vernacular musician Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, who was the estranged wife of controversial televangelist and musician Pastor Victor Kanyari. In a press statement released on Thursday, December 18, 2025, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said the directive followed a formal complaint lodged by an advocate acting on behalf of the late artist’s family. Family Raises Suspicion According to the ODPP, the family’s lawyer approached the DPP on December 9, 2025, expressing serious concerns over the circumstances surrounding Betty Bayo’s death and raising suspicions of possible foul play. Among the key issues highlighted in the complaint were: Health Status: The family maintains that the deceased had no known underlying medical conditions before her death. Lack of Transparency: The family claims they have been denied access to the post-mortem report, raising fears of a possible cover-up. DCI Directed to Investigate Acting under Article 157 of the Constitution, which empowers the DPP to direct and oversee criminal investigations, Mr. Ingonga has instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to take over the matter. “The DPP has directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death and to submit the investigation file for review and appropriate action,” the statement read. The ODPP reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the process independently, objectively, and in strict adherence to the law.
