FKF Leadership Congratulates Gor Mahia as Questions Emerge Over Mariga’s Silence
Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia FC have officially been crowned the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League champions, extending their dominance in local football with a record 22nd league title.
The confirmation came immediately after AFC Leopards suffered a 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet at Kericho Green Stadium, a result that mathematically handed K’Ogalo an unassailable lead at the summit of the table.
With Leopards remaining on 64 points after 33 matches, Gor Mahia were officially confirmed champions even before stepping onto the pitch for their own fixture against Mara Sugar FC, a match that had earlier been halted following intervention by the Sports Disputes Tribunal.
The championship now guarantees Gor Mahia a return to CAF Champions League football next season as they reclaim the title they lost to Kenya Police FC last campaign.
What stood out immediately after the title confirmation was the swift reaction from key figures within the Football Kenya Federation leadership led by FKF President Hussein Mohammed.
The FKF President wasted no time in officially recognizing Gor Mahia’s achievement, posting an official FKF-designed championship graphic across his official social media platforms accompanied by the message:
“Congratulations Gor Mahia FC for winning the 2025/26 SportPesa League title.”
His quick acknowledgment was viewed by many football stakeholders as a strong show of leadership and institutional respect towards one of the country’s most successful clubs.
FKF Co-opted NEC Member Abdalla Yusuf also joined in celebrating the champions, posting:
“Congratulations to Gor Mahia FC on being crowned SportPesa League Champions for the 2025/26 Season.”
alongside the official championship artwork.
Several other football stakeholders, administrators and fans also flooded social media with congratulatory messages as Gor Mahia celebrated another historic milestone.
However, even as celebrations continued across the football fraternity, attention quickly shifted to the silence of FKF Deputy President McDonald Mariga.
Almost 20 hours after FKF officially announced Gor Mahia as champions on its social platforms, Mariga had yet to publicly congratulate or recognize K’Ogalo’s title triumph on his official handles — something that has already sparked fresh debate among sections of Gor Mahia supporters online.
The silence has become particularly noticeable because, in recent months, a section of Gor Mahia fans and stakeholders have repeatedly accused the former international midfielder of allegedly being among individuals opposed to the club’s title charge. While no concrete evidence has ever been produced to support those claims, the perception appears to persist among a notable section of the club’s fanbase.
For many observers, this would have been the perfect opportunity for the FKF Deputy President to distance himself from such narratives by publicly recognizing the club’s achievement immediately after FKF’s official declaration.
Questions are also being raised after Mariga similarly failed to publicly acknowledge Mathare United Women FC and Shabana Starlets following their triumphs as Zone A and Zone B champions respectively in the FKF National Women Super League.
Instead, much of his recent football communication has centered around the Harambee Starlets U17 national team under coach Mildred Cheche.
Despite the growing online discussion, FKF President Hussein Mohammed’s immediate recognition of Gor Mahia’s success has largely been praised by stakeholders as a sign of unity, professionalism and institutional leadership at a crucial moment for Kenyan football.
For Gor Mahia, however, the focus now shifts toward continental football, with fans hoping the club can translate domestic dominance into a strong CAF Champions League campaign next season.
