HACO Industries and Nation Media Group Partner to Advance Environmental Literacy in Kenyan Schools

HACO Industries Kenya Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with Nation Media Group PLC through its Newspapers in Education (NiE) programme, marking a significant step toward strengthening environmental education and youth empowerment across Kenyan secondary schools.
The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), brings together HACO’s Green Learning Initiative and Nation Media Group’s long-running NiE platform to deliver an integrated learning model that combines environmental education, practical sustainability action, and mentorship. The initiative will initially be rolled out across 15 schools, reaching learners with tailored environmental content while encouraging hands-on participation in recycling, greening, and stewardship activities.
Under the partnership, HACO will provide customised sustainability learning materials, support the formation of student-led Green Guardian Clubs, and facilitate experiential activities such as tree planting, waste reduction, and eco-challenges. Nation Media Group will leverage its NiE infrastructure to distribute learning resources and newspapers to participating schools, publish student highlights and impact stories, and amplify youth-led environmental action through its education platforms, including Daily Nation and Taifa Leo.
Beyond classroom learning, the programme places strong emphasis on mentorship and character development, equipping learners and teachers with practical sustainability knowledge while inspiring purpose-driven educational and career pathways. A joint steering committee comprising representatives from both organisations will oversee implementation, supported by monthly monitoring and evaluation reports to track progress and outcomes.
The partnership reflects a shared commitment to nurturing responsible citizenship and advancing sustainable development by embedding environmental awareness early in the education journey. By combining HACO’s sustainability expertise with Nation Media Group’s national education reach, the initiative aims to enhance environmental literacy, promote active student participation in climate action, and recognise young environmental champions within school communities.

The MoU will run for an initial period of one year, with provisions for renewal and potential scale-up based on impact and mutual agreement. Both parties will co-brand learning materials and jointly showcase programme achievements, reinforcing their collective role in shaping a more environmentally conscious and resilient future.
