Kindiki Highlights Sh27bn Housing Fund Investment in Murang’a
The Housing Fund is investing Sh27 billion in Murang’a County to finance 26 fresh produce markets, nine affordable housing projects and eight student accommodation facilities, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said.
Kindiki said the investment forms part of a wider government development programme targeting infrastructure, housing, electricity and social services across the county. He spoke during a public engagement meeting at Kigio Shopping Centre in Gatanga Constituency on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
“The Housing Fund is investing 27 billion shillings to build 26 fresh produce markets, 9 affordable housing projects and 8 student accommodation hostel facilities in the County,” Kindiki said.
The Housing Fund projects are expected to cover different parts of Murang’a, with Gatanga among the constituencies benefiting from the programme through new markets, an affordable housing project and student accommodation.
In Gatanga, Kindiki listed Ndunyu Chege, Gatunyu, Ithanga, Kaguku and Gatura among the fresh produce markets being supported under the investment programme. The markets are expected to provide infrastructure for farmers and traders handling agricultural produce, particularly in an area where farming is a major economic activity.
The constituency is also set to benefit from the Sh5.4 billion Kakuzi/Mitubiri Housing Project, which will comprise 2,000 homes. The project forms part of the affordable housing component of the wider Housing Fund investment in the county.
Student accommodation is another component of the programme. Kindiki said Sh145 million has been allocated to provide 340 beds at Gatanga Technical and Vocational College, adding to investments aimed at improving infrastructure in education and training institutions.
Beyond the Housing Fund projects, the Deputy President said the government is implementing a Sh56 billion road construction programme targeting 1,265 kilometres across Murang’a County.
“The 1,265 kilometer 56 billion shillings target for road construction is part of the wider plan to transform Muranga County and its economy,” Kindiki said.
Gatanga is also set to receive Sh100 million for upgrading facilities at Kihumbuini School, while last-mile electricity projects worth Sh1 billion are underway across the county.
According to Kindiki, the electricity programme is expected to connect an additional 13,000 households and public amenities, expanding access to power as part of the wider development programme.
On healthcare, Kindiki said enrolment into the Universal Medical Insurance Scheme administered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) is increasing, with 460,000 of the estimated one million residents in Murang’a having enrolled.
The Deputy President held the public engagement at Kigio Shopping Centre as part of his wider review of development programmes in the county. He was accompanied by Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, nominated MP Sabina Chege and several Members of County Assembly.
The Housing Fund investment comes as the government seeks to expand affordable housing while also supporting complementary infrastructure such as markets and student accommodation, linking housing development with other public facilities across Murang’a County.
