LEARNERS TO BENEFIT FROM WATER AND SANITATION INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
MARIGAT, BARINGO – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2026 - 1,500 learners in Marigat, Baringo County, are set to benefit from a KES 37 million project aimed at improving learning environments and access to water and sanitation infrastructure, following the groundbreaking of the initiative by Airtel Money Kenya, through the Airtel Africa Foundation, in partnership with ChildFund.
Dubbed Building Brighter Futures, the project will support learners at Marigat Integrated Day and Boarding Primary School and Marigat Special School for the Visually Impaired.
Across both schools, the project will deliver a range of educational and WASH infrastructure, including 13 classrooms, 29 toilets, a fully equipped ICT lab, library renovation, and construction of a boys’ dormitory and a 30-point handwashing station.
“At Airtel Money, we understand the importance of creating access and opportunity, and that commitment extends beyond financial services to supporting the communities we serve. For the community in Marigat, we are addressing some of these practical barriers so that learners can spend more time focusing on their education, development and future,” said Airtel Money Kenya Acting Managing Director Bonke Michael.
The intervention comes at a time when access to safe water remains a significant challenge across Baringo County, with nearly 80% of the county classified as arid and semi-arid land. These conditions continue to affect the availability and reliability of water for many communities, with the County Government targeting an increase in water access to an average of 52% by the end of 2027.
“Our commitment to communities is anchored on education, digital inclusion and creating opportunities for young people to thrive. In Marigat, we are bringing these priorities to life by investing in better learning environments, water and sanitation, as well as ICT facilities, devices and connectivity. We want learners and teachers to have the tools they need to access information, build digital skills and prepare for the opportunities of tomorrow. This is part of our continued commitment to create meaningful and lasting impact to communities across Kenya,” said Airtel Kenya Managing Director Djibril Tobe.
Water availability across the schools will be strengthened through pipeline extensions, solar-powered pumps and water storage, while handwashing stations and gender-segregated, disability-friendly sanitation facilities will improve hygiene for learners and teachers.
“At ChildFund, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. For many children in underserved communities, particularly those living with disabilities, barriers to quality education can be significant. Through this partnership, we are helping address some of those barriers by improving access to learning facilities, safe water, sanitation and digital resources. These investments go beyond infrastructure; they create opportunities for children to participate fully in education, develop their potential and look to the future with confidence,” said ChildFund Kenya Programs and Sponsorship Director, Eric Oyoo.
The Marigat project is part of a wider partnership between the institutions that will benefit over 2,000 learners across four public schools in Baringo, Wajir and Garissa counties. In Garissa County, the initiative will support Garissa School for the Deaf and Catholic Integrated Primary and Junior School in Wajir County.
