Muthama Meets Sonko after Meeting Kalonzo, Raises Eyebrows
Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) Commissioner Johnson Muthama has held a second meeting with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, days after holding consultations with Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka, amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Muthama, a close ally of President William Ruto, met Sonko on Friday for discussions he said centred on leadership and the future of the country.
The former Kangundo MP confirmed that it was his second meeting with Sonko, the leader of the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), and hinted that more details would emerge later.
“We had lunch with former Nairobi Governor and NEDP Party leader, Hon Mike Sonko, this being our second meeting, to exchange ideas and compare notes on leadership and the future of our country. More will be said in due course,” Muthama said in a post on his X account.
The meeting came days after Muthama confirmed consultations with Kalonzo on October 1, 2026, attracting attention given the two leaders’ longstanding political rivalry.
In a statement issued on October 2, Muthama described the Wiper leader as his “brother and longtime political friend”, saying their discussions covered national issues, including matters affecting the lives and well-being of Kenyans.
“After a lot of exaggerated stories, I would like to clarify that yesterday evening, I had a consultation with my brother and longtime political friend Wiper Democratic Front leader @skmusyoka, on a range of national issues, including matters that touch on the lives and well-being of our people,” he said.
Muthama added that the meeting offered an opportunity to exchange views on the country's situation and consider the way forward on issues of national importance.
He did not disclose any specific agreements arising from the consultations or indicate that they had resulted in a new political alliance.
Sonko, meanwhile, has sought to position NEDP as an independent political player, avoiding a formal alignment with either the Kenya Kwanza administration or the opposition.
The former governor has been stepping up efforts to recruit aspirants to contest various elective positions under the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Sonko's impeachment as Nairobi governor raises a constitutional barrier to his own bid for elective office. The Nairobi County Assembly impeached him on December 3, 2020, and the Senate upheld his removal on December 17, 2020.
Article 75(3) of the Constitution bars a person removed from office for violating Chapter Six from holding State or public office. The precise grounds and legal implications of Sonko's removal are therefore relevant to determining his eligibility for future elective office.
Muthama has held several senior political positions. He served as United Democratic Alliance (UDA) chairman from 2021 to 2023 and represented Machakos County in the Senate from 2013 to 2017, where he served as Senate Minority Whip.
He was previously Kangundo MP from 2007 to 2013 and served as Government Chief Whip.
The meetings with Sonko and Kalonzo come as political leaders explore their options and parties seek to consolidate their positions ahead of the 2027 polls. Neither engagement has so far been publicly linked to a formal political agreement.
