Nairobi United FC’s growing influence on Kenya’s national team setup was evident as the Emerging Stars secured their place in the second round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations U23 qualifiers, edging Tanzania 5-4 on aggregate.

The Naibois were strongly represented across the two-legged first-round tie, with five Nairobi United players featuring in Kenya’s campaign against their East African neighbours.

Kevin Wangaya, Joseph Bate, Awiko and Duncan Omalla were among the Nairobi United players involved in the return leg on Tuesday, October 6, when Kenya suffered a 3-1 defeat at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam but progressed on aggregate.

Wangaya, who captained the Emerging Stars, once again proved his importance to the team. After scoring in Kenya’s impressive 4-1 first-leg victory at Nyayo National Stadium, the Nairobi United midfielder produced another decisive contribution in Tanzania.

With Kenya trailing 2-0 early in the second half, Wangaya combined with substitute Andreas Odhiambo from a short corner before delivering a dangerous cutback that Odhiambo converted to give Kenya a crucial away goal.

That goal proved decisive.

Tanzania would eventually win the night 3-1 after Selemani Mwalimu completed his brace, but Kenya held on to the 5-4 aggregate advantage and booked a place in the next round, where they will face Côte d’Ivoire.

Strong Nairobi United presence

Nairobi United’s contribution to the Emerging Stars was not limited to the return leg.

In the first encounter at Nyayo, which Kenya won 4-1, Awiko, Bate and Wangaya were among the starters, while Syphas Owuor came off the bench in the second half.

That meant four Nairobi United players were on the pitch during the opening-leg victory, underlining the growing depth of talent coming through the club.

Wangaya was particularly influential in Nairobi. The midfielder scored Kenya’s third goal shortly after halftime as the Emerging Stars opened up a commanding three-goal lead.

His performances across the two matches further underlined his growing importance to the national team setup, with the midfielder combining leadership, creativity and an ability to contribute directly in the final third.

For Bate and the other Nairobi United players, the two matches also provided valuable international experience at a crucial stage of their development.

Naibois becoming a national-team pipeline

The strong presence of Nairobi United players in the U23 squad is significant for a club that has been steadily building its football structure and profile.

The club has increasingly become a platform for young Kenyan talent, with its players now getting opportunities to compete at international level and represent the country.

The Tanzania tie provided another indication of that progression.

Five Nairobi United players were involved in Kenya's squad for the two matches, while Wangaya emerged as one of the team's most influential figures and wore the captain's armband.

Kenya's dramatic qualification means the Emerging Stars will now turn their attention to a much tougher second-round assignment against Côte d’Ivoire, with the two-legged tie scheduled for November.

For Nairobi United, however, the significance goes beyond the result.

The performances of Wangaya, Bate, Awiko, Omalla and Syphas represent another encouraging chapter in the club's growing contribution to the national team — and a strong indication that the Naibois are becoming an increasingly important source of talent for Kenyan football.
