Pan-African financial services giant SanlamAllianz has intensified its commitment to sport development and continental integration through the sponsorship of an elite Kenyan team set to compete in the 2026 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.

The announcement places Sanlam at the centre of one of Africa’s fastest-growing sporting events, as the Cape Town Marathon enters a decisive “Evaluation Year” in its bid to be elevated to the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors series.

The 2026 edition is expected to attract more than 27,000 runners globally, including 8,500 international participants from 102 countries and over 25 African nations. Organisers say the race is steadily positioning itself alongside global marathon giants such as London, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo, Chicago, New York, and Sydney, as it pushes to become the eighth World Marathon Major.

SANLAM AT THE HEART OF AFRICA’S RUNNING REVOLUTION

As the title sponsor, Sanlam has taken a leading role in shaping the marathon’s identity as a platform for inclusion, performance, and African representation on the global stage.

According to organisers, every finisher in the 2026 race will receive a provisional Abbott World Marathon Major star, which will be upgraded to official status once the marathon secures full Major recognition.

For Sanlam, the sponsorship goes beyond branding—it is a strategic investment in African athletic talent and cross-border sporting unity.

In a statement, Sanlam Allianz Holdings (Kenya) PLC Group CEO Dr. Nyamemba Patrick Tumbo said the partnership reflects Sanlam’s long-term vision of empowering communities through sport.

“At SanlamAllianz Kenya, we stand firmly beside our athletes at every stage of their journey.” said Dr. Tumbo. “Beyond sponsorships to professional elite runners, we designed the African Champions Unite Campaign to give back to our community by partnering with running clubs and inviting every Kenyan citizen to take part in the challenge, nurturing the dreams of Kenyan runners. SanlamAllianz Kenya has sponsored a total of seven elite runners; Japheth Kiplagat, James Munga, Fridah Chepkite Lodepa, Josephat Kipkoech, Dixon Marende, Meshack Shivina & Emily Chepkor. We wish them every success as they represent Kenya in the upcoming marathon.”

AFRICAN CHAMPIONS UNITE CAMPAIGN EXPANDS SANLAM FOOTPRINT

Sanlam’s influence on the race was further reinforced through the “African Champions Unite” campaign, a continent-wide initiative designed to connect elite and emerging runners through structured competition and sponsorship opportunities.

In Kenya, the campaign partnered with running clubs across the country, allowing both recreational and professional athletes to participate in a structured challenge monitored through Strava between April 20 and May 10, 2026.

Top performers were awarded full sponsorship packages to Cape Town, including return flights, airport transfers, accommodation, race entry, travel insurance, meals, and official marathon kits.

Organisers say the initiative reflects Sanlam’s broader goal of democratizing access to international sport while identifying and nurturing elite talent from grassroots levels.

SANLAM BACKED ATHLETES TO REPRESENT KENYA

Sanlam confirmed sponsorship of seven elite Kenyan runners who will compete in the 2026 marathon under its banner.

The athletes include Japheth Kiplagat, James Munga, Fridah Chepkite Lodepa, Josephat Kipkoech, Dixon Marende, Meshack Shivina, and Emily Chepkor.

The company said the selection reflects Kenya’s continued dominance in long-distance running and aligns with Sanlam’s ambition to position African athletes at the centre of global endurance sport.

GROWING GLOBAL PROFILE OF THE CAPE TOWN MARATHON

The 2026 edition also marks a major milestone in the marathon’s financial and competitive growth, with the winner’s prize purse increasing to USD 35,000 from USD 25,000 in 2025.

This increase underscores the event’s rising international profile and its ambition to attract world-class elite fields.

Sanlam says its continued investment in the marathon aligns with its broader strategy of supporting transformative African platforms that drive visibility, opportunity, and unity across the continent.

Industry observers note that Sanlam’s sponsorship role places it among a growing number of African corporate brands investing in sport not just as marketing, but as a long-term development and integration tool.

A STRATEGIC CONTINENTAL STATEMENT

For Sanlam, the Cape Town Marathon sponsorship is increasingly being viewed as a flagship continental activation, reinforcing its position as a key driver of African sporting excellence and financial empowerment.

By backing elite athletes, grassroots runners, and a rapidly globalizing marathon, Sanlam is positioning itself at the centre of Africa’s evolving sports economy—where endurance sport is becoming both a cultural identity marker and a commercial growth frontier.
