Why an Efficient HVAC System is No Longer a Luxury

Lately, weather patterns have become difficult to predict. You can leave your home fully layered, anticipating the usual July chills, only for the day to humble you with hotter-than-usual conditions. These shifts are more than a daily inconvenience; they are a sign of a changing climate that is already affecting how people live, work and use buildings.
Data from the Kenya Meteorological Department confirms that this unpredictability is likely to persist. The country’s average temperatures have increased by nearly 0.88 °C since the 1960s, with further projections hinting at a 1.7℃ increase by the 2050s. Rainfall patterns are also becoming less predictable, with periodic El Niño conditions contributing to heavier and more unusual rains.
These changes require a fresh conversation about how buildings are designed and managed. Indoor comfort should no longer be treated as a luxury. It is becoming part of the essential infrastructure that supports productivity, health, learning, customer experience and environmental sustainability.
This is why intelligent heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are becoming increasingly important. The role of HVAC has evolved significantly over the past decade. Previously it was all about cooling and warming, but modern systems are designed to also maintain healthy indoor air quality and use energy far more efficiently than previous generations. Increasingly, they can also respond automatically to occupancy patterns and changing environmental conditions, helping buildings consume only the energy they need.
Artificial intelligence is also transforming the HVAC user experience. Today’s intelligent systems can learn how spaces are used, when occupancy is highest and what temperature settings deliver the best comfort. Instead of relying on constant manual adjustments, users benefit from systems that respond automatically to changing indoor and outdoor conditions. For facility managers, AI-driven insights make it easier to monitor performance, anticipate maintenance needs and avoid unexpected disruptions. Ultimately, this creates a more seamless experience for occupants, while helping building owners reduce energy consumption and operating costs.
These capabilities matter because the conversation around sustainability has matured. As manufacturers, we are seeing a growing demand from developers and organisations looking for technologies that truly lower electricity consumption while supporting green building objectives.
However, technology alone cannot solve the entire puzzle, and must be matched with architectural planning and engineering to embed climate resilience into every stage of building design. Decisions around insulation, ventilation and climate control will determine how our buildings perform in coming decades.
This is especially important in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, education and retail, where indoor environments directly influence outcomes. A hospital, for instance, requires stable temperatures to protect medicines and ensure patient comfort. Schools, too, need well-ventilated classrooms that support concentration and learning, while hotels compete on guest experience. Factories depend on controlled environments to maintain productivity and product quality and individual homes need to be comfortable for their owners to get true value out of them. In each case, efficient climate management is now an important necessity, and its value will become more pronounced in the near future, in line with changing climates.
