Tusker Malt was crowned champions of the Chairman’s Polo Cup after edging out SBM Bank 6-5 to cap off an entertaining season finale at the Nairobi Polo Club.
The victory came after an action-packed match that went right down to the wire, with the teams battling through four gruelling chukkas.
However, Tusker Malt’s total team handicap of 3 against SBM Bank’s 2.5 handicap, enabled them to secure the coveted win in what was the season’s ender of the SBM Bank-sponsored tournament.
In the subsidiary final, Capital FM galloped to a 5-2 win over SGA to lift the Diani Reef Cup. Earlier in the day, Tanqueray’s 4-1 win over 24/7 was enough to secure third spot.
Speaking after the final, SBM Bank Deputy CEO Jotham Mutoka stated, “This has been a fantastic season of polo, filled with spectacular plays, down-to-the-wire excitement, and wonderful camaraderie amongst the players and fans. We want to thank everyone who came out all season long to support these talented athletes and enjoy the thrill of polo. The sport continues to grow each year here in Kenya thanks to the passion and dedication of the local polo community.”
He noted that SBM Bank is fully committed to the continued growth of polo in Kenya. “As SBM Bank Kenya, we recognize the rich 116-year heritage of this sport and its importance as part of Kenya’s sporting culture. We look forward to supporting many more action-packed seasons in the future,” Mutoka added.
The Chairman’s Cup capped off another thrilling season at the Nairobi Polo Club characterized by dazzling skills, intense competition, and a celebration of the sport’s rich history.
SBM Bank Kenya sponsored the 2023/2024 polo season as part of its commitment to preserving the sport’s long-standing legacy in the country and enabling the new generation of players to thrive.
The contest was the culmination of the annual Nairobi Polo Season that has been a staple of the Nairobi Polo Club social calendar, showcasing some of Kenya’s top polo players and providing world-class entertainment for spectators.
