Opposition party leaders Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa solidarity with the victims of enforced disappearances were in court for the hearing of abduction cases on Wednesday, January 8th, 2025 in Nairobi.
The senior counsels including Kalonzo Musyoka leader of Wiper and Azimio coalition co-principal, Narc Kenya’s Karua who was the 2022 presidential elections ex-Premier Raila Odinga’s running mate and former Defence minister Eugene Wamalwa of Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) joined the proceedings to identify those responsible of the abductions, demand accountability on the circumstances surrounding the disappearances.
Also present were Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo and Ndegwa Njiru lawyer who represented former Deputy President Nderitu Gachagua during his impeachment trial.
Following revelations that the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) would not honour court summons issued on December 31, 2024, to appear before Justice Bahati today, because he was in a meeting of national importance, Dr Musyoka poured cold water on the explanation: “We are not at war, so where are Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) Douglas Kanja and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Haji? This is a matter of grave importance.”
Since the abductions, victims Kibet Bull, Ronny Kiplagat, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, and Kelvin Muthoni have been released, but Steve Mbisi remains unaccounted for.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin were expected to appear in court to show cause why they should not be cited for contempt.
The two officials were previously ordered by Justice Diana Kavedza to produce six suspects abducted in December 2024, but the order was not complied with, prompting the court’s directive for their appearance on Wednesday.
They however did not show up.
Kanja and Amin, along with the Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Igonga and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, were named in the petition.
The petitioners including LSK and the Kenya Commission on Human Rights, have sought orders for the authorities to produce the abducted youths.
