Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has addressed concerns about her prolonged absence from office, revealing that she is on maternity leave. The 51-year-old governor, who holds dual citizenship in Kenya and the United States, disclosed that her leave is due to her being heavily pregnant and that she is currently in the United States for her maternity period.
Governor Kihika reassured Nakuru residents of her well-being through a statement, emphasizing her commitment to her gubernatorial duties despite her temporary absence. “I want to assure the people of Nakuru that I am in good health and fully committed to serving you. This is a brief period, and I will be back to fulfill my mandate,” she stated.
Chief of Staff Peter Ketyenye confirmed the governor’s leave, adding that the county administration remains functional under acting leadership to ensure continuity of services.
Governor Kihika’s candid acknowledgment of her maternity leave marks a rare instance of a senior political leader openly discussing the challenges of balancing personal responsibilities with public service. Her statement has sparked discussions on the importance of maternity leave for women in leadership roles, highlighting the strides toward inclusivity and gender equity in governance.
Kihika’s announcement has been met with mixed reactions, with some applauding her transparency and others raising concerns about the timing and logistics of her absence. Nonetheless, her move is seen as a progressive step in normalizing discussions about maternity leave for women in leadership.
Governor Kihika is expected to return to office after her maternity period, continuing her role as the leader of Nakuru County.
