The immediate closure of Ty Woods Limited in the Ketigoi area of Mau Summit in Nakuru County has been ordered following complaints from the neighbouring community over toxic emissions.
According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), the company had harmful emissions in the boiler area, causing uproar among the neighbours over the plausible health hazards such leakages pose.
Following the complaints, NEMA inspected the company on January 23, 2024, and deemed that the facility had failed to comply with the conditions of the Environmental Restoration Order issued on August 6, 2024.
The company also failed to obtain an emissions License and did not put in place pollution control systems of air pollution pursuant to the Air Quality Regulations 2024.
NEMA indicated that Ty Woods Ltd would cease to operate until adequate measures are put in place to control emissions to the environment.
Further, the company will be required to install an affluent Treatment Plant, contain oil spillage, clean the facility’s compound and involve a licensed waste handler to dispose of streams of waste generated by the facility.
