A group of activists want National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula sent to jail over alleged defiance of a court verdict that the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition was the Majority Party in Parliament.
Wetang’ula is once again facing legal action over his decision to declare the Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority party in the National Assembly.
Representing the 12 activists, lawyer Soyinka Lempaa asked the court to summon Wetang’ula to explain why should not committed to civil jail for contempt of court.
“The Speaker’s ruling on 12 February, 2024, was blatantly made in defiance of the courts decision and orders, risking the legality National Assembly proceedings,” the court documents state.
The called on the court to quash or set aside the unlawful ruling by Wetang’ula made on February 12th, 2025.
The activists also want court to amend its final orders issued on February 7, 2025, to reflect that Mr Wetang’ula cannot continue serving as Speaker so long as he remains the leader of Ford-Kenya party.
The petitioners asserted that Wetang’ula cannot legitimately as Speaker unless he steps down as Ford Kenya party leader
They argue that Wetang’ula cannot properly carry out his duties as the Speaker while still as an active member of Ford Kenya and the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
