Ruai Member of County Assembly (MCA) James Karanja, popularly known as Kariz, is suing the Nation Media Group owned television NTV for defamation after airing a false story against him.
In a broadcast aired on NTV titled *”RUAI MCA ARRESTED FOR FRAUD,”* alleged that Karanja was arrested conning money from the business community in a land deal.
It alleged that he defrauded local businesspeople of nearly Ksh11 million in a public land transfer scheme.
However, Karanja has vehemently denied these claims and any wrongdoing, asserting that he has never been involved in any fraudulent activities related to public land.
Furthermore, he maintains that he was never arrested, contrary to the misleading and defamatory information published and broadcast by the media house.
Political Rivalry at Play?
The dispute appears to be part of a broader political rivalry between Karanja and Kasarani Member of Parliament (MP) Captain Ronald Karauri.
The rivalry emanates from the popularity that Karanja has gained, not just within Ruai ward that he represents but across the entire Kasarani Constituency, thanks to his accessibility and unwavering commitment to community development. His hands-on approach in addressing critical issues such as the fair allocation of bursaries, exposing inflated budgets for road construction, and questioning irregularities in the implementation of key projects flagged by the Auditor’s report has solidified his reputation as a true champion of the people.
Supporters argue that Karanja’s rising influence has unsettled Karauri a first time MP and betting company Sportpesa boss, who, despite holding a parliamentary seat, is widely perceived as detached from the grassroots. Unlike Karanja, who has lived among the people and understands their struggles firsthand, Karauri is said to have no deep connection to the constituency, having neither grown-up nor resided there.
Political analysts speculate that Karauri’s political entry was primarily driven by personal business interests rather than a genuine desire to serve the people. This stark contrast in leadership styles has created a rift, with the majority of residents rallying behind Karanja as the leader they trust.
Fallout and Implications
The impact of NTV’s false report has been significant, with many believing it was a deliberate attempt to tarnish Karanja’s reputation and undermine the trust he has built with his constituents. However, rather than weakening him, the smear campaign has backfired, further cementing his standing as a fearless leader willing to take on political and media injustices. His legal battle against NTV is not just about clearing his name—it is a stand against media misinformation and political propaganda.
As the political landscape in Kasarani continues to shift, it is clear that Karanja’s influence is growing stronger, leaving Karauri increasingly isolated. Residents are closely watching the unfolding events, with many hopeful that this episode will serve as a wake-up call to focus on genuine leadership and community-driven development.
With overwhelming public support, Hon. Kariz remains steadfast in his mission to serve the people with integrity and commitment. The outcome of this legal battle and the broader political contest between Karanja and Karauri will undoubtedly shape the future of Kasarani’s leadership, but one thing is certain—Hon. Kariz’s star continues to rise, making him the people’s undisputed choice for true representation.
