Gor, AFC Leopards, Tusker Start Premier League Season with Victories

Kenya’s record 19 times soccer champions Gor Mahia, rivals AFC leopards and defending champs Tusker opened the 2022/23 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF PL) on a winning note in their season opening fixtures on Saturday, November 19, 2022.

Ulinzi Stars 0 AFC Leopards 2

Nigerian import Kingsley Ojo netted twice for Kenya’s 13 times premier league champions AFC Leopards to beat Ulinzi Stars 0-2 away at Lang’ata Barracks Complex to start the season as the league leaders.

Ojo scored the opener a minute after the start before doubling their lead in the second half from a penalty awarded after Maxwell Otieno was fouled in the box.

Leopards, who face champions Tusker in their next match, played without 10 players who are awaiting clearance from FKF including star forwards Victor Omune, Cliff Nyakeya and Ronald Shichenje.

Gor Mahia 1 Nzoia Sugar 0

Striker Benson Omalla’s header early in the second half is all K’Ogalo needed to start their campaign positively by edging out Nzoia Sugar 1-0 at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Omalla back from a loan move in Sweden with FC Linkoping City headed home the decisive goal from  Sydney Ochieng’s free-kick, seven minutes into the second half in-front of their patron Raila Odinga and Information Communication and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo.

Nzoia thought they had snatched an equaliser in added time but Moses Mudavadi’s goal was ruled out for offside.

The sugar millers coach Salim Babu protested the referee’s decision to cancel the goal.

Kakamega Homeboyz 1 Tusker 2

For the first time in six years, Tusker FC recorded a win in their opening league match of the season after overcoming Kakamega Homeboyz 2-1 at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

A goal each by Lawrence Luvanda and Jackson Macharia were enough to hand the brewers maximum points.

Homeboyz striker Christopher Masinza netted for FKF PL runners up their consolation goal.
