Harambee Starlets head coach, Beldine Odemba, has elaborated on her decision to recall experienced players like Esse Akida for the upcoming two-legged WAFCON tie against Cameroon, emphasizing the importance of their experience at this stage.
Akida, who has been out of the national team for over two years, has been called back due to her previous success in similar competitions. Odemba believes that her presence will be crucial for Kenya’s chances of advancing in the qualifiers.
“We are bringing back players like Esse (Akida) because of their experience. They have played on this stage and even at the WAFCON, so they understand the demands of such assignments. We also have young players who will be making their debut on this stage. I need to blend them in to ensure a seamless transition,” explained Odemba.
She further added, “The senior players will provide stability, and if they are in good shape, it will be an advantage for us. When we face Cameroon, I don’t want us to adopt a defensive mindset. We aim to score an early goal and not fear our opponents.”
Odemba shared her thoughts after her team secured a 1-0 victory against Police Bullets FC in a friendly match at the Kasarani Annex.
While the coach expressed overall satisfaction with the camp’s atmosphere, she expressed concerns about players who had not yet joined the squad, as they would have limited time to train with the team.
“The camp has been positive, and players are gradually joining. Some, like Terry (Engesha), have arrived, but we are still waiting for others like Dogo, Wincate, and more. Even though their arrival dates might not align perfectly with our preparations, I hope they join us in good shape.”
The Kenya women’s team is set to depart for Cameroon on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, with the first leg of the tie scheduled for Friday, September 22, followed by the return leg four days later.
