Mathare United Win First Premier League Game, Leaders Tusker Drop Points

The 2009 national soccer league champions Mathare United recorded their first Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF PL) as league leaders and reigning champions Tusker FC dropped points on Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

Bottom placed Mathare United fought from a goal down to beat Bidco 3-1 to post their maiden 2022/23 FKF PL season win at Utalii grounds in Nairobi.

Bidco drew first blood through midfielder Peter Nzuki signed from Sofapaka in the 14th minute before Donald Ange equalized in the 37th minute for a 1-1 stalemate at the breather.

Mathare United took over the driving seat through Daniel Otieno in the 60th minute before Curtis Wekesa ensured the “Slum Boys’” bagged maximum points for their season’s first victory.

AFC Leopards edged out Kenya Police in a ‘Betika’ derby to make it three league wins in a row at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Ulinzi Stars slowed Tusker’s charge at the top of the league by holding the defending champions to a barren draw at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Annex.

Despite the results Tusker have managed to get a slender lead of 24 points, same as Nzoia Sugar whom they tie on points but separated on goal difference.

Nzoia Sugar moved to second place in the FKF PL standings after beating Vihiga Bullets at their Sudi backyard in Bungoma.

Samuel Kapen’s 25th minute strike ensured Nairobi City Stars bagged their first back to back victory of the season with a win against relegation threatened Wazito FC.

KCB 1 Posta Rangers 1

Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) slipped from second to third place after being held to a 1-1 draw by Posta Rangers at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani main stadium.

Michael Apudo converted from the spot to shoot the mailmen into the lead after Brian Marita was brought in the  down in the box by Harun Mwale in the 8th minute.

The bankers KCB equalized through a penalty after Bramwel Chemweno was fouled in the box for the referee topoint at the spot.

Maurice Ojwang stepped up to take the resultant penalty and made no mistake as he sent John Njau the wrong way for the leveler in the 65th minute.

The 2009 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Sofapaka scored in the dyeing minutes to hold Kakamega Homeboyz 1-1 at Bukhungu Stadium.

After a barren first half, Veteran Ali Bhai opened the score Kakamega Homeboyz in the 75th minute befoe Ambrose Sifuna canceled the in the 88th minute to deny the hosts a win.

Kariobangi Sharks netted a last minute goal to pip Bandari 1-0 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Shariff Musa came off the bench as a substitute to net the winning goal at the stroke of time.
