North Eastern Prosecutor to Take Over as Director of Public Prosecutions

President William Ruto has nominated the Senior Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in charge of North Eastern region Renson Igonga as the replacement for Noordin Hajj in the position of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The nominee was among fifteen (15) candidates who had been shortlisted for the position. 

The nominees included former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Commissioner Thomas Letangule, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) acting Deputy Director Tabitha Ouya, lawyer, political analyst and lecturer at Catholic University Danstan Omari and deputy Director Director in the Department of Offences Against the Person in the Office of Public Prosecutions Jacinta Nyamosi.
Others are former Mombasa Mayor Taib Ali Taib, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) deputy Director , County Affairs and Regulatory Prosecutions Victor Mule, the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission Legal Services Director David Ruto, Winston Ngaira of Yarno and Company Advocates, the ODPP head of Supreme Court Peter Mailanyi, the ODPP Chief of Staff Lilian Okumu-Obuo, Jacob Ondari from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with practicing lawyers James Ndegwa and David Okachi.
Igonga’s name has now been forwarded to the National Assembly for vetting.
Igonga is also the current regional head in charge of North Eastern and is based in Garissa town.

If approved by the National Assembly, he will succeed Noordin Haji who was sworn in as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on June 14.

Should Igonga be approved, he will hold office for a non-renewable term of eight years.
Fiery lawyer Miguna Miguna who went public about his decision to apply for the the slot left vacant following Noordin Haji’s appointed as Director General of National Intelligence Service (NIS) however failed to make it to the shortlist.
The selection panel included the Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) CEO Twalib Mbarak, Solicitor General Shadrack Mose and Public Service Principal Secretary Mary Kimonye.
Other members of the panel appointed by President Ruto on June 21 were Roseline Odede, Richard Onsongo and Bush Obwocha.
The selection panel interviewed the shortlisted candidates on August 1 and 2.
