A group of eminent persons are planning to collect one million signatures to kick start a process of a constitutional review process.
Under the auspices of Promoters of Popular Initiative, the group led by constitutional lawyer PLO Lumumba and The Green Thinking Action Party boss Isaac Kalua said it was time for the constitution to be revised and hence the reason why they are planning to collect the signatures.
In a joint presser at Karen Greens Estate in Nairobi on Sunday, August 27th, 2023, they said, although the constitution has played a great role in shaping the country in the past 13 years, there is need to improve it.
“We are saying that on a day to be announced we shall commence the process of collection of signatures which must be a minimum of one million in order to ignite the process of a popular initiative,” said Lumumba a former secretary of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission.
Kalua said 13 years later it is time to relook at the issues that have been raised by Kenyans in the constitution.
“It is in order and normal that constitutions need to be revised after every 10 years,” said Kalua who is an environmental conservationist.
The former Kenya Anti Corruption Commission director said a panel of Kenyan professionals is conducting an evaluation of the Kenyan constitution, 13 years after its inception.
“We are here to make it known to Kenyans that we ought to engage in a conversation that is anticipated by the constitution under article 257 to commence a popular initiative with a view to having our constitution amended,” said Lumumba.
