Betting firm Sportpesa in partnership with the Antony Waithaka Foundation and Wazee Pamoja Premier League donated medical equipment to Jericho Hospital Makadara sub county, on Saturday, December 04, 2021.
Sportpesa through the Antony Waithaka Foundation and in collaboration the Wazee Pamoja Premier league constructed an incinerator, an ambulance drive, patients footpath and donated accident beds for the health centre.
In attendance were the Anthony Waithaka Foundation founder/patron Athony Waithaka aka Makadara 1, Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) Secretary General Franklin ‘Kuka’ Imbenzi and the first Kenyan boxer to win a World Boxing Council (WBC) title Fatuma ‘Iron Fist’ Zarika.
Waithaka who is in the race for the Makadara constituency parliamentary seat thanked Sportpesa and said that the Anthony Waithaka Foundation which he runs will continue to support different activities in Makadara and sourcing for potential sponsors like Sportpesa to support the local community in the area.
The Sportpesa Community Social Responsibility (CSR) manager Lola Okulo urged Makadara residents to elect a visionary and trustworthy leader who has the goodwill of companies in bringing development in the area.
“As a company we are ready to work with like minded leaders in supporting the local community. In the area we are now sponsoring the Wazee Pamoja League in ensuring this area which has produced many Kenyan football stars continue being resourceful and active with their talents in old age,” said Okulo
As the Wazee Pamoja League entered its 15th year this year, the former Kenyan Premier League (KPL) sponsors Sportpesa came on board in March, 2021, to support grassroot football by sponsoring the league.
The aim of the league is to take care of mental issues affecting retired players by keeping them active in the field upon retirement from active playing.
“The league is very important as it keeps the Wazee active and helps them remain as key figures in the community,” concluded Waithaka.
There are many former professional players who have found a home in the league, with the likes of former Tusker FC and Kenya international Osborne Monday, who plays for Cruz FC.
Some of the veterans playing in the league include former AFC Leopards players Omar Shaban, Maurice Shikanda, and Ibrahim Shikanda. Others are William Odidi, Fred Arocho, Collins Gatuso and Isaiah Ougo.
The annual tournament resumed with 10 clubs participating. They are Paradiso from Jericho, Green Yard from Buruburu, Cruze from Umoja, Friends Zone from Umoja, and Jambo from Uhuru estate.
Other teams comprising legendary players include Tipples from Jericho, Paris Sports from Umoja, Five Q from Uhuru, Teasers from Buruburu, and Two Two Seven from Jerusalem estate.
